EASTER FUNCTION AT TAKAKA The Easter Catholic gala held in the Catholic Church grounds at Takaka was an outstanding success. The Takaka Citizens’ Band played popular music during the afternoon. The three Queens’ stalls did keen business in an atmosphere of pleasant rivalry. The stalls were conducted by the following: Town Queen, Mesdames A. Byrne and E. Page: East Takaka Queen, Mesdames L. Barnett and T. Baigent; Tarakohe Queen, Miss N. Foskett, Mesdames Galoway and Grant; ice cream, Miss Eva Delaney and assistants. Mrs .Spears ran a very popular art stall. Mr Miller <Md brisk business at his jumble stall. Bob Reilly collected a large crowd around his sideshow. The ladies’ trophies in the clock golf competition were won by Misses M. Windle and M. Bailey. Mr T. Couper carried off the men’s trophy and also won the tea waggon race. The ladies’ naildriving was won by Mrs T. Couper. Mr Richmond proved to be a first-class auctioneer. Children’s races were conducted by Messrs L. Barnett, D. Nalder, C. Windle and J. Gooch; afternoon tea! Misses K. Byrne, M. Windle, P. and t! Emms, Mesdames B. Woods, E. Hailes and W. Jenkins. Reynish’s orchestra provided the music for a dance held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall. Mrs Lewis played an extra. The winning queen was Miss Geraldine Barnett, and her two princesses, Misses Pat Emms and Noeline Foskett. The crowning ceremony will be held on 13th April.
