Investigations are being made of the German hoard of money and art treasures in salt-mines at Merkers, says Reuter’s correspondent with the Third Army. Details of gold bullion, particulars of which have been given by released prisoners of war, are not yet officially confirmed. The mines where the currency and art treasures were found ar e reported to have a tunnel length of more than 300 miles. There are Rembrandt, Raphael, and Van Dyke paintings and Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiques. The German curator of State Museums, Dr Rave, who was captured, denied that the art treasures were loot. Three captured Reichsbank officials were apparently concentrating on moving German paper currency to the rear. They said banknote printing presses were destroyed by air raids last February.
