INSECTS IN CARGO

UNLOADING WORK DELAYED Perth, March 20. Insects which had infested the straw packing of a consignment of goods from Sydney held up the unloading of an inter-State ship at Fremantle. Lumpers discharging the cargo became affected with an irritating rash and had to cease work. It was found that the straw packing was infested with an insect called straw mite. The cargo was subsequently treated with chemical disinfectant and the men have since resumed work.

A shipping official said that the rash caused by the mite was not dangerous and would disappear in a day or two. The insect was rarely found in cargoes discharged at Fremantle.
