LONG-SUFFERING NELSON

NO THROUGH RAIL CONNECTION An ex-Nelsonian who travels extensively throughout New Zealand feels that the people of Nelson are long-suffering in doing without through railway connection with the rest of the island. On a recent visit to Nelson he said the handicap struck him all the more forcibly in the light of experience of rail facilities enjoyed by other parts of the Dominion. There was no place anywhere near as big as Nelson which did not have h! through railway and this part of New Zealand would continue to be isolated if the short gap were not filled. Auckland was pressing to get a rail link with Gisborne, but, in his opinion, the Nelson line was very much more urgent. He also commented on the general standard of hotel accommodation in Nelson compared with that of other towns of Nelson’s size. Blenheim, with only half of Nelson’s population, was much better off for flrst-class hotels.
