RICHMOND BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers. There were present the Mayor (Mr A. R. Tuffnell) Councillors J. Hart, W. Houston, R. C. A. Marshall, E. Gamble, E. Lukey and T. Shackleton. Accounts amounting to £738 9s 2d were passed for payment. FOREMAN S REPORT The following streets have been graded: McShane’s road. Lower and Upper Queen street, Hill street, Champion road, Wensley road. Metalling has been carried out on the Crescent street footpaths. Thirty-six yards have been spread on Hill street south and 18 yards have been used for patching work in the borough. General maintenance has been Carried out on all streets, Town Hall and the Cemetery. A letter was received from the secretary of the Nelson Garrison Band asking for a donation for band funds. The council regretted Jihat it was unable to consider the request. A letter was received from the Waimea Electric Power Board and also the telegraph engineer of the P. and T. Department advising that there was no objection to the ejection of street name plates on power poles and telegraph poles in the borough, but the council indemnifies both against any liabilities which may arise on account of the plates being attached to the poles. The Nelson Progress League asked for a contribution to the funds of the league for the present current year. A contribution of £5/5/- was granted. It was also asked that the Progress League be asked to meet more often and also that the league should continue to advocate the through railway service from Glenhope to Inangahua Junction, as this service would be very beneficial to Nelson. A letter was received with a donation of £5 from the Waimea Football Club with a request that the council enlarge the present dressing shed in Jubilee Park. Itl was resolved that the club be thaifked for the donation and that as soon as the time was opportune the enlarging of the shed would be carried out. The Library Committee reported that it had gone into the question of joining up with the Country Library Service and recommended that this be done. The council resolved that the Country Library Service be adopted as from the Ist January. 1945. One building permit for alterations was approved.
