TOMATO SEEDLINGS

PLANTING-OUT BEGINS QUARTER OF A MILLION FOR NELSON GLASSHOUSES AN £BO,OOO CROP Within the next two or three weeks almost a quarter of a million tomato seedlings will be planted out into Nelson glasshouses. In some parts of the Wood area this work has already commenced. Last year there were 280 glasshouses in Nelson, with a total area of 17* acres, and in the last few months some 12 or more new houses have been erected in the city and Stoke areas.

There are two methods of indicating glasshouse area, and these are likely to be very confusing. For registration purposes the Government has adopted the policy of calling 5000 square i'eet of glasshouse an acre. The reason for this is presumed to be that the Government considers the yield from this area to equal the yield from an acre of outside grown tomatoes. According to this measure there are 124 acres of registered glasshouses in Nelson. The value of Nelson’s glasshouse tomato crop in a normal season is estimated to be something over £BO,OOO.
