N.Z. MINISTER’S TOUR
STUDY OF TRANSPORT PROBLEMS # Brisbane, July 19. Making a comprehensive study of transport problems, the New Zealand Minister of Transport, Mr O'Brien, and the Commissioner of Transport. Mr Laurenson, are now in Brisbane on their way north in Queensland.
Mr O'Brien said that he was specially interested in rubber and petrol supplies which New Zealand drew from the same pool as Australia. His Government desired that the allocation should be equitable in comparison to the respective populations and essential undertakings. Transport in New Zealand, said Mr O’Brien was highly organised and rationalised to prevent duplication of running and manpower waste. A zoning scheme had saved an enormous amount of petrol, tyres and labour and was generally quite acceptable to the people. Australia was ahead oi New Zealand in regard to charcoal burners, because of the fuel advantages with hardwoods. As Minister of Marine, Mr O'Brien is also investigating harbour projects with the idea of gaining information for improving the harbour at Greymouth and Westport.
