INCOME TAX
NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIAN RATES A correspondent, ’Taxes” (Murchison >, enquires the difference between New Zealand and Australian taxation of n man with a wife on an income of £235 a year. In New Zealand he would pay no income tax on this amount of earned income, being entitled to a personal exemption of £2OO and one of £SO for his wife. In Australia he would pay £ls 12s if the income is “earned” and £l9 10s if it is derived from property. “Pay-as-you earn” income taxation is now in operation in Australia. This covers all taxpayers deriving income in the form of salary, wages, fees, pensions, etc., but docs not cover income derived from businesses, professions or investments.
