WAR ON LONDON RATS

London, Dec. v Total war against thousands of rats living in the sewers of Greater London will begin this week-end. It is being organised by the Food Ministry, whose experts estimate that in a year the rats have destroyed nearly 2.000,000 tons of food in Britain and have cost the nation £60.000.000. In London 156 local authorities are co-operating with the Ministry, which will open the campaign on a 3000-mile front, made up by the network of London’s sewers. The rats are at present being baited with pieces of stale bread and old cheese. They will be fed for three days, and on Friday will be given a feast of bread and cheese, supplemented by poison? and poison gas. These tactics have already proved successful in Kensington, where bail laid down at one entrance to the main sewer accounted for 6000 rats.
