RESCUE OPERATIONS

POINTS RAISED BY PASSENGER Criticism of the methods used in the rescue of Mr Tasman G. Taylor, a sur vivor of the launch Warrigal, off Cape Terawhiti last night was made by a passenger on the steamer Matangi. He asked why no boat was launched by the Matangi: whv no officer was at the ship obviously in charge of rescue operations: why was a life belt thrown without being secured to a line; and why was the flare not secured close to the belt? It is pointed out that the Holmes light was attached to a buoy and not a lifebelt and was intended as a marker for the manoeuvring of the steamer. The Chief Officer was one of those carrying out the rescue. The captain of the vessel was on the bridge at the time.
