U.S. FORCES IN AUSTRALIA
DETAILS OF RECIPROCAL AID (Rec. 12.10 p.m.) Sydney, This Da> Australia supplied 8.000.000 articles of clothing and nearly 150,000 tons of fooJ to United States forces up to 31st August, 1943. This has been announced by the Minister of Supply, Mr Beasley, who added that the cost to Australia of reciprocal aid to American forces based in Commonwealth territory might this year exceed the budget estimate of £100.000.000. Expenditure under this head would approximate 17 per cent, of Australia’s total war expenditure for the year. Mr Beasley said the food supplied bv Australia in the period under review included more than 30.000 tons of meat, 28,000 tons of canned goods. 25 - 000 tons of fruit and vegetables, 23.000 tons of bread, biscuits and cereals, 15,000 tons of potatoes, 6000 tons of sugar, 4000 tons of butter, 20,000.000 dozen eggs, and 12,000.000 pints of milk.
