DEFENSIVE POSITIONS

ATTACK BY ALLIED DIVEBOMBERS Rugby, July 2. An American navy communique, according to a Washington message, states: “In the South Pacific early yesterday afternoon dive-bombers attacked Japanese defensive positions at Lambeti plantation, Munda, New Georgia. Fires were started. The same afternoon a formation of torpedo-bombers and divebombers attacked Japanese defensive positions in the camp section at Vila, Kolombangara Island. Seven pilots from 17 American planes previously reported missing have been rescued.” Lambeti plantation is several miles east of the airfield at Munda. According to an agency message Japanese plane losses so far have risen from 101 to 123. They indicate that the number of Japanese planes used during the Rendova landing was substantially larger than the total of 110 initially reported in a communique.—B.O.W.
