PROTECTIVE WORK NEAR OARO
The sea-coast portion of the Hunda-lee-Oaro section of the South Island Main Trunk railway is at present being built up with a protective wall of rock ballast to stop the encroachment of the sea on the line. The ballast is being taken by rail from Goose Bay, about two miles north of Oaro. The line has been built to within a few chains of the site of the Goose Bay station, where a set of points allows the trucks to be relayed back into the quarry. Although the railway service will continue on the HundaleeOaro section, the building up of the sea wall is likely to continue for some time, said the resident engineer at Kaikoura (Mr L. L. Meadowcroft).
