SUBURBS OF ROME

BOMBS BY ALLIES NO CASUALTIES REPORTED STRONG BARRAGE PUT UP (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) London, July 4. Allied planes last night dropped bombs in the suburbs of Rome, states an Italian communique. Only a few fragmentation bombs fell at Ostia and Fiumicino, and no casualties are reported. Anti-aircraft batteries in Rome put up a strong barrage, adds the communique. Ostia and Fiumicino are both about ten miles south-west of Roma Yesterday Rome radio said the capital’s princip. 1 ancient and artistic monuments had been buried under sandbags or concrete to prevent them being damaged in air raids. The radio said Palermo was practically wrecked by Allied raids. “The city is very nearly completely ruined and can in the future be considered useless as far as the war effort is concerned.” The correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain at Algiers reports reconnaissance over Trapani reveals that the Lilians are blowing up harbour installations. There was a chain of explosions along the edge of a 5000-foot quay which is now useless for shipping.—P.A.
