HOCKEY ASSOCIATION, £2OO The Nelson Hockey Association has invested £2OO in National Savings. SUBSCRIPTION OF £1,000,000 TOTAL FROM AUCKLAND SAVINGS HANK Auckland, This Day. The trustees of the Auckland Savings Bank have made a further contribution to the Liberty Loan of £IOO,OOO to-day, raising the bank’s total subscription to the Third Liberty Loan £I.OOO,OOO—P.A. INSPIRING^LEAD ESTATE OF LATE SGT. WARD, V.C. INVESTMENT BY PARENTS Wellington, This Day. An inspiring lead to those who should financially help their country’s war effort has come from -Wanganui, states the National War Loan Committee. The parents of the late Sergeant Pilot Ward, New Zealand’s first Victoria Cross winner of the present war, have invested the whole of their gallant son’s estate in the Third Liberty Loan, thus carrying out his express wishes that the money he left behind should be on active service in the country’s war effort. Mr and Mrs P. H. Ward have invested in this way all their late son’s deferred pay, his superannuation from the teachers’ superannuation fund, and the money due from service pay. “This means,” states his mother, “that every-; thing he possessed, amounting to £279 (including £l4 from back pay just received from overseas), Jias been put in to the struggle, to finish as quickly as possible the job he, with so many others, set out to do. It is our hope that sufficient funds will ultimately be available in the Allan Ward, V.C., Recognition Fund established by the Wanganui City Council to found a scholarship in aeronautical research in order that Allan’s work may be carried on in the years to come.” The Victoria Cross was won by the late Sergeant Ward two years ago for a very courageous deed which saved the lives of a bomber crew returning from a raid on Germany, and while still over enemy territory. A fire broke out in the starboard engine of his aircraft, which was five miles up, but Sergeant Ward, risking the hazard of '■jri ng swept away, climbed out on the wing, Using footholds which he kicked

in the fabric of the fuselage, he reached the fire and put it out. The bomber returned safely, but some months later the gallant New Zealander went on a bombing flight over Germany’s great seaport of Hamburg, and did not return. His death on active service was subsequently announced by the Air Ministry.—Special to “Mail.” THE LOAN~OFFENSIVE TOWN AND COUNTRY TOPICS Nelson District headquarters of the War Loan campaign report to-day as follows: Army Attacking Motueka. “The Army is again attacking Motueka to-morrow night. As will be seen from ‘The Mail’s’ advertising columns, a special display of a large portion of the equipment now in Nelson consisting of tanks, ‘Dingo’ cars, anti-tank guns, together with other machinery of modern war will be made in High street at 7 o’clock. This is an opportunity not to be missed and besides illustrating the enormous variety of equipment necessary for a modem army, serves also to show how necessary are our investments for war purposes. An amplifying apparatus will accompany the party.” An Allocation. “Buxtons Limited have arranged with the Loan Committee to have their subscription of £3OOO allocated as follows: £2OOO to Nelson City; £IOOO to Motueka.” Trading Banks’ Hours. “On the occasion of Saturday’s “services” parade and demonstration the trading banks have agreed to remain open until 12 noon for the purpose of receiving loan subscriptions only.” For Tobacco Growers. “To enable tobacco growers whose proceeds from leaf may not be available by the 10th July to subscribe to the Third Liberty Loan, the companies with growing contracts, Buxtons Limited, W. D. and H. O. Wills (N.Z.) Limited, and the National Tobacco Company. Limited, are prepared to make advances for this purpose against proceeds, free of interest.” Staff Contribution. “The staff only of Messrs Newman Bros. Limited, have to date subscribed slightly over £IBOO to the War Loan, and, in addition, have, in nearly every case, increased their contributions to National Savings.” Motueka Women’s Committee. “The ka War Loan Women’s Committee his a large number of member workers moving around within the borough boundaries. The policy adopted is to see to it that not a household will remain unaware of the country’s need and so spread the necessary publicity for the country’s third war loan. Reports coming to the central office indicate clearly that the closing date—loth July—is at legist a month too early for most of the farmers, especially those engaged in tobacco growing, now the principal industry in the district. The selling season is at present only about half-way through and the growers’ proceeds usually come to the surface towards the end. To those who raise this point the canvassers are authorised to say that the trading banks (there are two in Motu-) eka) would take up a loan for the farmers on very easy terms. A £lO deposit for instance is all that is required for £IOO stock.”
