S.I. MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY

CONSTRUCTION WORK EXPEDITED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, This Day. Referring to the building of the South Island Main Trunk railway, the Minister of Works (Mr Semple), in the Public Works Statement presented *to Parliament to-day, said that as he regarded conservation of rubber and petrol as most vital he had made personal efforts to see that die work of plate-laying was pushed on with the best possible use of the limited resources in men and materials. The Minister said that although for a time work had been practically suspended on the railway, constructional operations had been expedited in order that rail traffic could be extended and road services correspondingly curtailed at the earliest possible date. Construction work, said the Minister, had recently been speeded up in order to expedite the completion of the remaining length of line between the railhead at Okarahia and Clarence Bridge.
