WOMEN CALLED UP
Call-ups of women recently represent the first mass direction of female labour, but estimates of women who could be diverted to war work have been greatly exaggerated. So far. of all the women interviewed, only about 15 per cent, have been added to the national labour pool, according to the Director-General of Manpower. Many women have been called up for work in canneries. Women who do not obey the order are liable to six months’ gaol, or a fine of £IOO. or both.— Newsletter.”
