FAILURE TO REGISTER AS AN ALIEN

FINE OF £3 IMPOSED “Though the Assyrians came down like a wolf on the fold in the Old Testament, they are friendly aliens now,” remarked Mr C. R. Fell, counsel for Wadih Barakat, who was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with failing to register as an alien. He pleaded guilty. Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., was on the Bench. Detective-Sergeant F. Hayhurst prosecuted. He said that defendant, a Syrian, had failed to register as required by the regulations. Mr Fell said that defendant's father came to New Zealand many years ago and was naturalised, but the son was not included in that. He was hazy as to the results of naturalisation and for a number of years had voted at elections. He was perfectly loyal. The Magistrate said he must take into account the fact that publicity had been given to the need for aliens to register. He imposed a fine of £3, costs being 10s.
