VICTIMS OF SUBMARINES
NAZI SHIPPING IN MEDITERRANEAN (Rec. 11 a.m.) Rugby, June 24. Further attacks on enemy shipping are reported by British submarines operating in the Mediterranean. An armed merchant cruiser of some 7000 tons was sunk, and two naval auxiliaries, two medium-sized supply ships and eight small supply ships were also destroyed. One of the small supply ships was laden with motor transport and cased petroleum. One of our submarines intercepted and attacked a patrol of two Italian destroyers north of Sicily. One torpedo hit was seen on a destroyer of the Orsa class. It is not known if the enemy sank. Three large tankers, two large supply ships and a small tanker were hit with torpedoes, but in no case was it possible to observe the result. One large tanker, however, was hit with three torpedoes and it is considered likely that this vessel was destroyed. A radio location station on Salina Island, in the Lipari group north of Sicily, was bombarded by one of our submarines. Repeated hits were scored on the station and adjacent buildings. These successes have taken place over « wide area and include attacks made off the French Riverina, Sicily, in the Adriatic and the eastern Aegean.— 8.0. W.
