TARGETS AT MEAULTE
BOSTON BOMBERS AND SPITFIRES OTHER OFFENSIVE OPERATIONS Rugby, June 23. An Air Ministry communique states: “This evening Boston bombers, escorted by Spitfires, attacked targets at Meaulte. Two enemy fighters were destroyed. Typhoon bombers, with an escort of Typhoons, attacked targets at St. Omer, and later other Typhoon bombers with Typhoon escort, bombed an airfield at Maupertus. Not one of our aircraft is missing.” One of the planes was destroyed by the New Zealander, Wing Commander Alan Deere, who did not fire a single shot in bringing his personal score to 21. Returning home after bombing, he saw an enemy aircraft at 12,000 feet and “made a pass’ at it, without pressing the button. “The German, taking evasive aetion, went down into an uncontrollable spin,” he said, “and hurtled straight to the ground.” The other was destroyed by a Canadian. In the course of offensive operations over France and Belgium to-day, Venturas, Bostons and Typhoons attacked enemy airfields, as well as industrial and railway objectives., GERMANY ADMITS NUISANCE RAIDS A German news agency says a few enemy aircraft last night made isolated nuisance raids over the Reich. Bombs were dropped on fields near a west German town but no damage was caused.—B.O.W.
