APPLICATIONS FOR EXEMPTION CASES DEALT WITH YESTERDAY ! The Armed Forces Appeal Board, ! consisting of Messrs G. L. Page (chair- ! man), J. Dicker and L. Ward, dealt J with the following appeals yesterday afternoon:— Hume Steel Ltd. (Mr C. M. Rout) appeared in respeet. of an employee E. N. Hayward, an electric arc welder at present employed on urgent work in connection with the Cobb Hydro Scheme. Only three welders were employed on this contract at present and reservist was the only welder who was allowed to weld in all positions. The appeal was adjourned sine die. The Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co., Ltd., appealed for seven employees —four foundry employees, two marine officers and one seaman. The foundry employees were D. Riddell, blacksmith; P. W. Winn, apprentice . engineer; P. Gribbon. shipwright and joiner; K. G. Griffith, boiler-maker. The appeals in respect of these four men were supported by the Manpower Utilisation Committee on the Nelson Engineering Trade. The other reservists appealed for were W. G. Henigan, marine officer, S. A. Jones, marine officer, and B. D. Simpson, seaman. The board granted sine die adjournments in respect of all seven appeals. Messrs S. Kirkpatrick and Co., Ltd., appealed for six employees, in their canning factory. The employees were R. J. Schwass, who was in charge of the cooking retorts, a married man with 5 children; D. O. Wiechtrn, tinsmith, engaged on hand soldering; E. Fitzsimmons, who opposed the appeal, was employed in the engineering department; R. Chapman, tinsmith and registered plumber; J. P. Steel, employed in the engineering department; H. D. Gardiner, tinsmith. The company’s appeals in respect of these six men were adjourned sine die. Nine employees of the Mental Hospitals Department were appealed for, the appeals all being adjourned sine die. The men were:—A. J. Walters, senior attendant; T. H. G. Bunster, senior attendant; V. E. Timms, junior attendant; H. A. Hawthorn, junior attendant: H. R. Power, junior attendant; A. R. Hurst, carpenter and joiner; N. P. Harford, electrician and engineer; R. C. .Drogemuller, attendant; and I. H. Brough, junior attendant. Appeals by the Public Works Department for six employees, engaged on defence or urgent public works contracts, were heard and adjourned sine die. The employees appealed for were:—A. R. Watson, A. W. Roake, J. W. Brown, G. E. Roderick, A. J. Muir and J. K. Hearfield.

C. R. Fell applied for a recommendation from the board for release from Home Guard service of W. H. Gibbs, his farm manager. The appeal was opposed by the Home Guard authorities.

After some discussion it was left to the appellant to make some suitable arrangement with the officer commanding te Home Guard unit concerned to grant leave when required.
