BASE INDICATED

PLANES WHICH RAIDED JAPAN Chicago, Nov. 24. The book “Torpedo Junction,” by the “Daily News” correspondent, Robert Casey, which has just been published, indicates that the American planes which raided Japan on April 18 were carrier-based. At the time Mr Casey’s whereabouts were secret. His own office knew only that he was with the fleet. Mr Casey’s diary on April 18 reads: “North of Marcus. Cold. Seventyfive mile gale blowing. Rough. Carrier upending. A lot of planes despite the weather. I do not know what that proves, except that an aeroplane will actually fly in this soup. The 2.30 p.m. Tokio radio announced an air raid. Excuse us please for wondering if our journey up here might be synchronised to this raid. 9 p.m.: We are turning eastward, and what do you make of that?”—P.A.
