MOTUEKA TENNIS CLUB

COURTS OFFICIALLY OPENED The Motueka Tennis Club’s courts were officially opened for the season on Saturday in ideal weather. Mr E. L. Glover, president of the club, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors and expressed pleasure at seeing so many members and friends present. He was particularly pleased, he said, to see Mrs J. H. Rankin, who had been associated with the club for many years, and to welcome back to Motueka, her son, 2nd Lieut. Harry Rankin who had recently returned from the Middle East. He was glad to see him in such good health. The club, he added, was represented in the armed forces by Sub-Lieut. P. Craig, Pilot Officer K- Starnes, Corpl. T. Starnes and Pte. V. Potter. The members were very proud of these men, and he felt sure that the fine sporting spirit they had displayed on the tennis courts would remain with them on active service. The club would be kept going during the war period; and all those interested in tennis would be gladly welcomed at the courts at any time. New tennis balls were practically unprocurable, and members would have to carry on with those available. The creditable condition of the courts was due to the untiring efforts of the secretary, Mr C. Morrison, who had! given much of his valuable time in the interest of the club, and for which the club owed him a debt of gratitude. Mr Glover expressed the hope that members would have a happy and successful season on the courts and that more young players would come along and help to keep the game going. Mrs E. L. Glover, the president’s wife, served the first ball and the courts were declared open for play. A delicious afternoon tea was provided and dispensed by the ladies, after which friendly matches were arranged by Mr W. Starnes, the club captain.
