AIR ACTIVITY IN DESERT
MANY TARGETS BOMBED AERODROME IN CRETE ATTACKED (Rcc. 9.50 a.m.) Rugby, Oct. 23. A Cairo communique says: “Apart from patrol activity yesterday there is nothing to report from our land forces. On Wednesday night our heavy bombers attacked the aerodrome at Maleme (Crete). Fires were started among aircraft. Our medium and light bombers were engaged over forward enemy landing grounds in the Fuka area. Aircraft were seen burning and explosions were caused among dumps and encampments. Yesterday our bombers and fighters attacked enemy landing grounds. Continued direct hits were scored on aircraft and other damage inflicted. During a subsequent air battle our fighters destroyed six of the enemy and damaged many more. Our long-range fighters successfully attacked road targets between Mersa Matruh and Solium.
“The enemy continued attacks on Malta yesterday, but with no more success than previously. Our fighters shot down at least three enemy aircraft. A further MEIO9 was destroyed by ground fire. From the above and other operations six of our aircraft are missing.”— 8.0. W.
