NUMBERS LEAVING SCHOOL Reporting on the Girls’ College the Principal, Miss J. Stewart, stated that since the beginning of the school year 56 girls of the roll of 404 had left school either to take positions (in the majority of cases), or to help at home or on the land. Last year the number who had left at this time was 49 (roll 433) and the year before 59 (when the roll number was at its highest, 455) so, in the war years, the percentage of girls leaving during each year had varied very little. Twice recently the girls had brought generous gifts of flowers to help special patriotic efforts —the N.G.C. Old Girls’ Association shop day, and the Daffodil Day of the Horticultural Society. In the first week of the term many girls responded to a suggestion that they should bring some money earned in the * holidays for the International Student Relief Fund. Their contributions Lmounted to £7 10s, a substantial sum , to add to the £5 already donated by the members of the Student Christian Movement Club. A recital had been given to the whole school by the Danish pianist, Haagen Holenbergh. A handsome gift of a set of Dickens's novels, from Mrs F. W. O. Smith was acknowledged. The boys were taking over the patriotic shop on Thursday, 15th October, and had already made over £6O worth of useful articles for sale. The congratulations of the College were extended to M. M. Shand on being awarded the D F.C. The Principal recorded with regret the death on active service o! J. O. Stewart, C. H. Thompson, G. M. Porter and J. N. Peart (master).
