COMMERCIAL TRUCK TYRES

BEST POSSIBLE USE WANTED CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DISCUSSION In an effort to ensure that the best possible use is made of used truck tyres, the Nelson Chamber of Commerce decided to-day to draw the attention of the Associated Chambers of Commerce to the fact that under the present regulations used tyres unsuitable for further use on heavy transport and passenger vehicles could not be transferred to truck operators carrying lighter loads and running shorter distances. It was the opinion of the meeting that such tyres which had a certain amount of wear in them, could be made good use of by town carriers and goods delivery services. The chairman (Mr L. E. H. Baigent) said that under the present conditions some tyres were not being used to the best advantage, and he suggested that people or firms with tyres in their possession which they could not use further themselves, should be able to hand them on to others who could make use of them. Some too worn to be safe on heavy transport could be retreaded and handed to other users. The secretary (Mr E. R. Neale) said that representations on that subject had already been made by the Tyre Control Committee. The commercial truck tyre position was serious. At present the Nelson district's monthly quota was so small that in normal conditions one firm alone would use the number now available for all transport. The chairman: "There's no doubt it is a tragic position.” He referred to the serious position that delivery services, such as for wood and coal, were facing. He felt sure those people could get some relief if they could get possession of tyres no longer useful to other forms of transport. The motion, as stated above. was moved by Mr L. W. Field, seconded by Mr W. Armstrong and carried.
