NEW ZEALANDERS AT PLAY TENNIS AND SWIMMING CONTESTS (N.Z.F F. Official News Service) (Rec 9.15 a.m.) Cairo, Aug. 7. New Zealanders were the guests of the Tewfikieh Tennis Club at tennis, water polo and swimming contests on 2nd August when they competed against several of the most prominent tennis players and swimmers in Egypt. The Tewfikieh Club won the tennis and water polo and honours were even in the swimming. New Zealand’s greatest individual success was in tennis, when J. J. Macarthy (Hawera) defeated the Egyptian singles champion, De Walden, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Macarthy is a well-known player in Wellington, where he was among the first ten on the ranking list. He is a former holder of the New Zealand universities singles title. He recently won the singles Maadi camp championship. The New Zealand polo team was out. classed by the Egyptians and lost 7 to nil. The swimming programme comprised two relay races, one of which was won by New Zealanders.
