WORCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT

TWO GALLANT ACTIONS (Rec. 10.35 a.m.) Rugby, Aug. 10. Two gallant actions fought in the recent Western Desert campaign by the Worcestershire Regiment have now been told in Cairo. The regiment fought to cover the British withdrawal from Gazala and was attacked by 60 German tanks supported by infantry in lorries. While the regiment attacked the tanks German infantry tried to work round their flank, but British troops attacked with Bren guns, bombs and bayonets and fought their way out. Again at Tobruk the regiment, which had been reduced from 700 to 500 in an earlier encounter, bore the brunt of the first attack on Tobruk. They fought a delaying action and then the survivors fought their way out. — 8.0. W.

STRAFFER” GENERAL KILLED

London, Aug. 10. The “Daily Telegraph” says that Lie-it.-General \y. H. Gott was killed in action in Libya. Lieut.-Gen Gott was known as “the straffer.” He was aged 45 and was one of the youngest genest generals in the Army. He commanded the Seventh Armoured Division and probably knew more about the Western Desert than any other senior British officer.—P.A.
