FINDING THE MONEY
NELSON PATRIOTIC APPEAL Owing to yesterday's indifferent weather conditions, the campaign for raising the £3,000 to complete the city’s quota was not as satisfactory as it otherwise would have been. Nevertheless, the committee are confident that as the public come to realise the position, there will be no withholding of their support., stated the chairman this morning. He instanced the variety of articles the Patriotic Society are called upon at short notice to provide. Recently, he said, 24 hours’ notice was given of the departure of a ship from these shores. In that time, the society's workers packed 83 tons of gift goods which included, among other things. 1160 gift parcels, 65.000 cigarettes, 3,000 books of cigarette papers, 900 song books, 12$ dozen crib boards. 108.000 envelopes. 2,000 hymn books, 1.440 New Testaments, 2,500 games, 60 dozen pencils. 288,000 sheets writing paper, 1.500 books, as well as a wireless set for each unit. “This will give some indication of the magnitude of the task we have in hand.” he added. “Besides providing for our men in the Forces, the society is now confronted with the urgent and increasing number of prisoners-of-war parcels. Fortunately, we have that wonderful organisation, the International Red Cross, to handle this important aspect of our work, but we must find the money. Provided the generosity of the people be measured by the comfort and joy the gifts bring to those that receive them, then we shall have no difficulty whatever i reaching our objective.”
