CLOSER RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA

ITo tin- Editor 1 Sn. Kindly allow me to comment on the above. It seems to me, judging! from the trend of their remarks, that none of the correspondents were at the recent meeting dealing with the sub ject at all. They apparently read your report and a fertile imagination did the, rest. Sir, I attended the meeting, but did not hear one of the speakers criticise and condemn Britain as some cot- , respondents allege. Certain individ-j uals who have since been proved wholly wrong in their international! outlook were certainly condemned, but I am sure that the majority of the large i audience present agreed witli the! speaker on that aspect. They pointed out just as one of the correspondents! does, that many of the beneficial j changes m Russia could quite profit-1 ably be adopted in the British Com- i monwealth, and the same thing un-j doubtedly applies to Russia; she could adopt and practice many of our fair fundamental principles. Surely the fact of closer relations ' with Russia being necessary is amply I borne out by the latest pact between, Britain and Russia, and I put Britain first for a very evident reason. The I correspondent with the dog name en-| deavours to excuse Chamberlain by. accusing Stalin of duplicity. Has he: ever heard of the phrase or slogan.! whichever he likes best, “The end jus- ■ titles the means?” I think he has, sir,! even in his college days. I feel quite sure that the Mayor of this city' would not have presided throughout such meeting as the correspondents de-! scribe, without some protest, instead of j which, however, he thanked them for an interesting and instructive address. I have no connection whatever with j the said movement, but I do recognise that "Fair play is bonnie piny."—l am, j etc., SCOTTIE. | Nelson. 12th June.
