WHEAT BREEDING

USE OF GLASSHOUSE GRAIN RIPENS IN WINTER To permit the raising of two generations of wheat in one year—one to ripen in winter and one in summer—a large glasshouse is used at the Wheat Research Institute’s plant-breeding station at Lincoln. It is equipped with artificial light and heat, both of which are required to obtain successful grainsetting for winter generation of wheat. With the aid of two glasshouse generations, four generations are obtained in two years. This process is particularly helpful when producing "compound” crosses, which require an additional year in comparison with “single” crosses, states the annual report of the Wheat Research Institute.
