FIGHTING FORCES CLUB

REQUEST FOR USE AS PATRIOTIC TEAROOM CONTINUANCE OF LEASE IN DOUBT An indication that the Nelson Provincial Patriotic Council may discontinue the lease of the Fighting Forces Club room was given at a meeting of the executive yesterday afternoon. Mr A. H. Crawley applied for the use of the Fighting Forces Club room to be controlled by the Nelson Patriotic Committee for a patriotic tearoom. He felt that this would fill a want in Nelson and bring in funds. If a club was found to be necessary later the tearoon* would have to give way. The tearoom would be staffed voluntarily. The chairman, Mr E. R. Neale, expressed concern about the question of competition for local tearooms. Mr J. G. McKay pointed out that the club rooms had previously been tearooms. Mr G. R. McKellar thought that if the property could be profitably used it should be. though he was concerned whether they might tread on someone else s toes. Mr A. R. Tuffnell moved that the request be granted. Mr C. R. Fell said he was worried about appealing to the town for contributions and then running something in direct competition with local businesses. After a discussion Mr Fell said that he felt now that the council might not be justified in keeping the rooms on. It was decided that the Nelson Patriotic Committee be informed that Ihe answer to the request depends on the decision of the council as to whether the lease be continued or not and Ibis decision will be made within a week.
