TONS OF DRIFTWOOD

HARVEST FOR WANGANUI Wanganui, Jan., 9. The flood in the Wanganui River this week brought clown tons of driftwood, and yesterday there was much activity on the Wanganui East side of the river by collectors. From an early hour whole families were busy collecting driftwood, some being fortunate enough to secure strainers, posts and bridge planking. A few ventured into the river with boats, but most were satisfied to stay on the bank and secure their wood supplies as they were borne into tht land. Along the whole length of the river on both banks where driftwood was being collected there was not one vehicle being used to remove the “spoils”—silent but eloquent evidence of how petrol restrictions have forced lorries and cars off the road. There was, however, an abundance of bicycles parked along the bank, and some people were carting loads to their homes strapped to their machines.—P.A.
