MISSING IN FLOOD

I FEARS FOR OHAKUNE MAN HOUSE CLOSE TO RIVER | Wanganui, Jan. 8. It is believed that Mr Ole Olsen, bil[liard saloon proprietor, aged 79, lost his life when the Ohakune township was flooded on Tuesday afternoon. He was last seen alive in his billiard saloon in Clyde street when the flood waters began to rise, but he was not officially reported as missing until yesterday morning. A search among the debris at the rear of the premises was made by Constables S. H. Cave and R. D. Gardner, with the aid of a tractor and several men. but no trace of Mr Olsen was found. After the flood waters subsided, it was thought Mr Olsen had gone away j with friends in a car, but this was later found to be incorrect. It is thought that when the flood waters started to rise, Mr Olsen left the saloon and went to the back of the premises to attend to a cow ana calf. The back door of his house near the saloon is only about a chain from the Mangateitei River, which burst its banks and flooded the town. The house received the full force oi the torrent of water, and all outbuildings were washed away.—P.A.
