SUPPORT FROM ALL WANTED
CENTENNIAL FUNCTIONS STREET DAY ON THURSDAY To make a success of the commemoration of the Centennial the full cooperation of all people of the Province is necessary. The Nelson Early Settlers’ Memorial Association realises that, and is working to enlist their support. The programme of celebrations for 31st January-2nd February next will be worthy of the occasion only if the people get behind it to make it so. Most expensive among the items on that programme will be the bringing of the 4000 odd school children of the district to Nelson on Ist February, and the making of the day one they will remember. This and other aspects of the commemoration are estimated to cost £3OO. The Province will be asked to find a portion of this money. The other Centennial project for which funds are needed is the completion of the Memorial on the Church Kill. Substantial contributions towards this work, especially from families who are descended from the early settlers, have been made, but it is considered that about £2OO more is required to complete the work. A special issue of a Centennial badge will be on sale on Thursday when a , street day to raise funds will be held. ! The Association appeals to all Nelsonians to do one or all of three things: j <1) Join the Association (subscription 5s up to December, 1942>; (2) Send a; donation to the fund individually or collectively by families; (3) Support! Thursday’s appeal by buying a badge, j The next Centennial function will j take place at the Port on Saturday afternoon when the centenary of the arrival of Captain Arthur Wakefield and j the Expedition ships will be commem- ; orated. —
