WAR EFFORT AND DEFENCES
Christchurch, Oct. 27. The Government had not lost sight of social problems, but at the moment the need for building up New Zealand’s defences and playing a full part in the war effort transcended everything else, said the Minister of Supply, Mr Sulli- , van, in an address at the annual Labour [ Day picnic at Linwood Park to-day. Mr Sullivan, in a brief speech, emphasised the present dangers in the } Pacific. “I pray God that, with the help of , our working people, we will continue • to play our part alongside our Allies, " including Russia,” he said. “I hope , that when we assemble here once more ’ we shall have brought this war to a . victorious conclusion.” —P.A.
