SPECIAL NAZI SHOCK TROOPS | ATTEMPT TO BREAK THROUGH j TO THE DON SEVERAL ATTACKS REPULSED (Rec 1.30 p.m.) London, Oct 26. Although news concerning fighting in the Ukraine is scanty it appears that the Germans at present are exerting the greatest efforts on this front. The German threat to Rostov remains acute, Large numbers of tanks, bombers and a considerable force of infantry have been thrown into the battle while is raging at the distant approaches to the town. The front running from Makeevka to an indefinite point on the shore of the Azov Sea between Taganrog and Ros- j tcv, has recently been the scene of : some of the bloodiest fighting of the ! war. Any German progress is made ! at extreme cost of men and material. > Russian troop;; are pouring into | Rostov, but the Moscow “Pravda’’ | makes no secret of the fact that the j lown : serious ly menaced. The journal | states (hat the Germans are throwing | ir-. special shock troops in an attempt to , break through to the Don. Several j stern attacks on 25th October were re- ' pulsed. A strong fortified line must be built to bar the enemy’s way to Rostov. Fresh German troops are continuously reaching the front and very great difficulties are confronting us. The Berlin radio claims that German bombers have torn up a long stretch of railway running to Rostov and destroyed several trains. The correspondent of a Rome newspaper in the Ukraine says the Axis troops have not yet met the bulk of the Russian forces, only the rearguards, who fight to the death. Fog, cold and mud are slowing down the progress of motorised columns. Cavalry has become the fastest arm.—U.P.A.
