NAZI THREAT TO CAUCASUS

CRITICAL PERIOD FOR TURKEY INCREASING STRENGTH OF DEFENCES « (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) London, Oct. 26. The increasing German threat to the Caucasus throws a spotlight once more on Turkey, says the Ankara correspondent of the “Sunday Times.” It is believed Hitler would not hesitate to infringe Turkey’s neutrality if he succeeds in subduing the Crimea and decides to risk a sea invasion of the Caucasus. Turkey is going through a critical period, but enough time has been gained to present to the world a consolidated and stronger nation. If the respite continues throughout the winter Turkey next summer will be potentially the strongest nation in the Balkans and the Middle East, Eritain and United States contributing to this strength with an ever-increasing flow of armaments. President Inonu and his Government are preparing for the Turkish nation to play its role. When the eighteenth anniversary of the j Turkish Republic is celebrated on Wednesday the President will review troops clad in British-made battledress, steel helmets, and boots. There will also be on display British-made bombers and fighters. Not only the military lessons but the political lessons of the war have been taken to heart by Turkey. Turkish statesmen are unwilling to risk the future with vacillating partners, but there is no ground for doubting Turkey's loyalty and sincerity.—U.P.A.
