FIREMEN AT WORK

DEMONSTRATION AT MOTUEKA NEI.SON MINS IOIIDSON SHIELD PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES \NI) SERVILE BARS The eighth fire brigade demonstration under the jurisdiction of the Nelson. Marlborough and Golden Bay Sub- ' Association of the U.F.B.A. was held on Saturday at the Cricket Ground. Motueka. In spite of unfavourable weather there was a large attendance of the public who displayed keen interest in the events. The programme was not finalised until 7 p.m. owing to the number of teams competing being more than usual. The Municipal Junior Band, under the leadership of Mr Gerald Green, was in attendance and rendered a number of The championship < Fordson Shield 1 was won by the Nelson team and the Nelson E.P.S. team were the runnersup. annexing the Robertson Shield, while the third place was taken by Motueka. EVENTS AND WINNERS The programme consisted of eight events and the fact that the eight comevent must have been most gratifying to the Motueka Volunteer Fire Brigade who were responsible for staging this year’s demonstration. VISITING FIREMEN ENTERTAINED In the evening members of the visiting teams were entertained at a dance , held in the Institute Hall at which there ; | was a large attendance of the public. • ' During an interval the Mayor, Mr W. , J. Eginton, on behalf of the people of j Motueka, extended a cordial and heartv : welcome to the visiting firemen. It wa* j particularly pleasing, he said, to see s< .many teams taking part in the competi- . ; lions that day. He felt that competitions ’ | this kind made for greater efficiencv j in view of the crisis through which % I the world was passing it was necessary • j that firemen should be able to give ol their best. In making reference to the i j part that firemen had played in EngI land the Mayor stated that they bac ; shown the world a glorious example ol j j courage and fearlessness, and had earn,ed the nation's gratitude. Mr Eginton said that all were aware of the distress and suffering that coulc _ jiesult from an outbreak 0 f fire and add , cd that it was upon the resources ant ! j efficiency of fire brigades that life anc I property largely depended. When lie ' assumed office as Mayor he had prom | i ised Motueka more efficient fire fighting ! plant, and he was pleased to say tha 1 . in less than three weeks Motueka woulc be in possession of such a plant. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES | Trophies won during the day were presented to the successful teams by Deputy-Superintendent T. Simpson who extended to the recipients hearty congratulations. PRESENTATION OF SERVICE AWARDS The Mayor, who presented service bars to members of the Motueka Fire Brigade, spoke of the splendid service that had been rendered by the recipients, especially by Supt. A. Canton. Fireman O. C. Wilkinson, and Treasurer G. H. Goodman who had records of 29 years. To these members the Mayor handed gold bars. Silver bars went to Secretary R. Primmer, 23 years; Fireman L. Kelling. 21 years; Fireman W. Robinson, 7 years; Fireman N. Harvey, 7 years; and three years certificates to Motorman A. Stuart and Fireman J. York. The recipients were accorded musical honours. Fireman R. V. Bythell. Blenheim, appealed to the residents of Motueka to support their Brigade in every way possible as the members were giving their services voluntarily and whole heartediy for the benefit of all. He was, he said, impressed with the live young Mayor that Motueka possessed, one who was taking a great interest in fire brigade matters He was pleased that the trophies that day had been well distributed and that new organisations had competed successfully against seasoned firemen. T. Coatsworth. Later ! the visitors were motored to Kaiteriteri where they were entertained.
