CHEESE FOR LOCAL MARKET

EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROCEDURE j (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington. This Day. The question of the sale of cheese on the local market for the coming season was now under consideration by the Government, the Minister of Marketing (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) revealed in a reply to an urgent question asked in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon by Mr H. S. Kyle (National, Riccarton) on behalf of Mr T. D. Burnett (National, Temuka). . Mr Kvle asked whether the Minister would inform the country whether cheese hitherto produced for and soid on the local market was to be diverted for export so as to make up the 160.000 ions required for Britain. In a note Mr Kyle pointed out that cheese factories in South Canterbury would be opening in a fortnight’s time, and they would want to know if their products were for overseas or for the local market. If the cheese was for local markets cooling arrangements would have to be built because cheese was debarred from freezing works if for a local market. It was necessary that a full investigation should be made of the present position, and that investigation was now proceeding, declared the Minister. When all the facts were available to the Government a decision would be made as to the procedure for the sale of cheese on the local market next season, and a full public announcement would be made simultaneously.
