VETOED BY ROOSEVELT
BILL FOR HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION DEFENCE NEEDS NOT CONSIDERED ! (Rec., 1.30 p.m.) Washington, Aug. 4 President Roosevelt vetoed a bill authorising 250,000.000 dollars for highway construction oi. the grounds that it apportioned the bulk of the funds among states regardless of defence needs. The Navy Department announced that last month 34 naval vessels were launched and 63 keels laid. The latter include one aircraft-carrier, two cruisers, ten destroyers and three submarines. JOINT INCOME TAX RETURNS The House of Representatives voted to-day eliminating the provision requiring married persons to lile joint income tax returns, which has been the subject of hot controversy in the last week. President Roosevelt advised th Ways and Means Committee to eliminate the joint provision but the I committee rejected the President’s \ request because it meant a loss of 323,000,000 dollars revenue. The House vote is subject to a later roll call. AXIS WORLD CONQUEST Mr Cordell Hull. Secretary of State, in a Press conference denounced recent foreign developments as demonstrating, oevond doubt that the Axis world con quest was a movement which can and will be restricted.
