FISHPLATES ACROSS RAILS
WORK OF BURST A*. ESCAPEES EXPLANATION BY MINISTER Wellington, This Day. An explanation ol how obstacles were placed across the main south railway line between Balclutha and Kakapuaka is given by Mr Semple, vlmister of Railways. Several fishflates, it was reported, were placed on the rails, making additional precautions necessary to ensure the safe passage of the exp ses, Mr Semple stated to-day. llis inquiries showed that two lad.s who had escapee* from a Borstal institution were travelling south along tha railway line, and under the impression they would probably be ursued by officials travelling on veloupedes out two or three fishplates on the rails with the object of delaying the pursuit. The obstacles were removed and the boys taken into custory. “1 make this statement,” added the Minister, “i'n order to assure the public that there is no ground for hinking it was an ordinary act of abotage carried out by some person resident in the locality with a view to ierailing the expresses.” (Earlier me jc elsewhere in this issue.)
