RACING CARNIVAL

CANTERBURY FIXTURE OPENS M < ( ESS FOR BAI.I.VRKIT S I. C l.Oi l) BRABAZON ! Special to “T!.c Mol) 1 ! Christchurch, This Day. , Canterbury’s winter raring carnival opened auspiciously at Hiccarton on .Saturday with the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting which is generally looked on as a curtain raiser to the ' G.J.C. gatherings. With the exception of Tidewaiter and St. Cloud none of the contestants stood out as likely to earn later distinction and little light was thrown on the Grand National prospects. lIOMFRY STEEPLES i Interest was lent to the Homeby Steeplechase as each of the seven starters claim an engagement in the Grand National Steeplechase. The Taieri trained pair Slayer and Whirr had a decided call in the betting over Aussie Ha and Ballybrit and the first named has never stripped in better order. Whirr and Erination set the pace from the start with Ballybrit always handy all through the first mile. Slayer’s jumping left a lot to be desired and lie lost some ground al nearly every fence but then warmed iup to his task with half the journey gone. Whirr and Erination were stil! in charge both jumping well. They 'could never get far away from Ballybrit who raced up to them going round the top turn. In the meantime Slayer and Dozie Boy had been improving their positions and once into the home straight Ballybrit raced to the front and clearing the remaining fences in rare style ran home a comfortable winner by three lengths from Slayer with Golden Glow a poor third. followed by Aussie Ra. A dozen lengths; from the post Dozie .Boy threw out a strong challenge to Ballybrit but then | i unaccountably fell on the flat and lost his rider F. Baker who had to be re-, moved in an ambulance. PERFECT JUMPING As a Grand National trial Ballybrit's ! lii.-play was encouraging. He gave a perfect exhibition of jumping and was, , racing on so strongly over the last furlong as to suggest that another mile would not trouble him. Dozie Boy was . going just as well as the winner when j h's jockey appeared to collapse a. dozen lengths off the post and in 1 falling brought his mount to grief. ! Slayer’s showing was disappointing and; in the early stages his jumping left a ; l"t to be desired but on warming to his j work he improved greatly in this j respect. On their form it looks as if Ballybrit should keep him busy in the Grand National. Whirr, Erination land Aussie Ha all ran like non-stayers j though the last named was going better I at the finish than at any other part of I j the race. On pulling up Golden Glow was decidedly lame. Most of those that went to the post for the Longbench Hurdles will be seen I out next week in the Grand National I Hurdles but the eleventh hour direction . lof Foxiana robbed the race of some interest. All the early running was made by Mungatoon and Donadea with • Tidewaiter never far away. When well into the home straight Donadea appeared to have fair prospects but a • faulty jump at the last fence sent him right back. When asked for a final effort Tidewaiter made short work of .Mungatoon and won in effortless style ; by four lengths. TIDE WAITER’S EFFORT | As a national Hurdles trial TideI waiter's effort was most convincing. He | was always within striking distance of the leaders and was never off the bit. Dividend’s showing was disappointing. He jumped slovenly and never looked to have any chance with Tidewaiter. Master Dingle went a poor race and Great Flight was always in a rear-; ward position. ST. CLOUD’S EASY WIN St. Cloud’s easy win in the Brabazon Handicap was of such a convincing nature as to draw’ attention to her Winter Cup prospects. She was always handily placed in a field of 28 most of whom claim an engagement in the next week's big handicap. As the horses rounded up for the run home, Sunny Knight, Wings of Song and | Saxon Tor were the most prominent j and at a distance Sunny Knight had a , useful lead. Then St. Cloud came ' along with a great challenge which ; landed her winner by two lengths. j The manner in which St Cloud i wound up her task was most im- 1 pressive. As the field turned for home I six others headed her but she was I galloping so strongly at the finish as to suggest that the extra furlong in the j Winter Cup will enable her to again j account for all those that opposed her : in Saturday’s race. Royal Lancer, Noble Fox and Gayest Son were never ! prominent but Haughty Winner was , putting in good work over the last bit. RESULTS Christchurch* Aug. 2.
