GRATIFIED AT WORK DONE

OIL PROSPECTING COMPANIES STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF MINES Invercargill, July 28. Gratification with the work done by different oil prospecting companies that have taken out licenses throughout the Dominion was expressed by tlie Minister of Mines, Mr Webb. The Minister said that he was confident that if oil was to be discovered, the companies now engaged would find it. The most modern plant was being u c ed and in the next three months a plant greater in capacity than those now operating would probably begin operations. Should oil be discovered it would prove to be one of the biggest booms since refrigeration became established. Thirty-five licenses had been granted, : covering an area of 10.143 square miles, and 178 experts were engaged in scientific work to locate sites which were considered suitable for drilling. More than £1.000.000 had been expended in prospecting work. The Midhurst well, which was the deepest in New Zealand, was now beyond 7638 feet.—P.A.
