NELSON DISTRICT RESULTS

POLLING LIGHTER THAN USUAL SEVEN OLD AND TWO NEW CITY COUNCILLORS FOUR NEW MEMBERS ON HOSPITAL BOARD MR W. J. EGINTON MAYOR OF MOTUEKA Interest displayed in the local body elections throughout the Nelson district on Saturday was not as keen as usual, polling everywhere being lighter than in the last elections on 1 1 th May, 1 938. The City Councillor to top the poll was Mr H. G. B. Hurst with 1877 votes. At the last elections when Mr E. R. Neale, who is the newly elected Mayor of Nelson, topped the poll he secured 2697 seats on the Council and this time there were only 1 0, there thus being only one who could not be elected. All seven of the sitting councillors who were candidates were returned together with two new ones. There will be four new members on the Nelson Hospital Board two from the combined Nelson-Tahunanui-Richmond area and two from the Waimea Country district. In each area one of the two sitting members who were candidates were re-elected. All the three sitting City members on the Nelson Harbour Board were returned, with the addition of one new one. One sitting member of the Waimea County Council was defeated. The Motueka Mayoralty election was won by Mr W. J. Eginton who defeated the sitting Mayor. Following are the results of the preliminary counts made on Saturday evening, but the figures may be subject to alteration due to changes in the recounts and by the addition of declaration votes: —
