| MOTUEKA MAYORALTY MR W. J. EGINTON ELECTED i The Mayoral election at Motueka on ; Saturday resulted in Mr W. J. Eginton being elected by a majority of 36 votes. | The polling figures were:— W. J. HULBERT 228 j As the number of electors on the roll j is 879 the votes recorded thus represent j approximately only 55 per cent, i When the result of the poll was made | known at the Council Chamber at 6.30 p.m. about 100 of the public were pre- | sent. ! Mr Eginton, the Mayor-elect, in i thanking the electors for their support said he was particularly proud of being e elected Mayor after eight years’ service on the Council. He had felt dubious about contesting the seat against Mr Hulbert who was two years his senior ■t on the Council. Disappointment was s expressed that only four nominations 7 had been received for six seats on the Council. COMMENT BY MR HOLLAND PROTEST AT TRADES HALL RULE SEEN SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULT Christchurch, May 18. “The municipal election results tell their own story,” said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland. “The nation-wide landslide against Labour I candidates is most significant, specially following the recent. Waipawa by-elec-tion, when the National Party quadrupled its majority. “In my opinion the result can be interpreted as a demonstration of the public’s determination not to have the war effort activities interfered with b.y less important subjects,” Mr Holland said. “The rejection* of the Labour candidates is the public's method of protesting against the rapidly-growing extent of trades hall domination in both national and municipal politics. The fact that the landslide is so nation-wide shows that public feeling is uniform all over the Dominion, for the issues : were different in the various centres” It was obviously from the voting that many thousands of erstwhile Labour supporters had reversed their votes. If. as had often been contended, municipal elections held the same year as Parliamentary elections should be regarded as a barometer of public opinion. National Party supporters would examine 1 the results with unusual interest in view of the Parliamentary elections within six months.
