THE PATRIOTIC FUND

[To the Editor] Sir, —Will you kindly allow me space ; in your paper to support Mrs Atmore’s appeal over the air on Thursday evenings for collectors for direct giving to the Patriotic Fund. It has long been the wish of the City Patriotic Committee to have this method of giving intensified in our midst, but with the numerous appeals ] made hitherto, this had not been possible. The citizens have now had sufficient respite to warrant a further claim on their patriotic generosity, and with the promise that no other major appeal would be made this year, an effort is being undertaken to exploit the possibilities of consistent and methodical giving, according to the means of the people, in support of the men who are laying down their lives for our safety and welfare. We wish to express our grateful thanks to those block collectors, who have been responsible for raising £9OO during the past nine months. When it is remembered that this sum is made up of small amounts, but not more than 250 subscribers, it will be realised what might be accomplished if all were consistently contributing through this avenue. All other local methods of raising money might be eliminated if only the value of sacrificial giving were recognised and practised by all. The appeal over the air by Mrs Atmore was for collectors to staff certain blocks in the city which have failed to function since the house to house canvas last year, owing to the fact that some collectors undertook the duty for that one day only, while others have left the district or become weary in well-doing. Now is the time to step into the breach and make good. All present block collectors have been requested to canvas their block once again with a view to securing fresh subscribers, or new box-holders. Will all householders please receive them sympathetically, and help to make, what to many is an unenviable task, as pleasant and profitable as possible? The office in Hardy street next to the Masonic Hotel is open each afternoon except Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4, and Friday evenings from 7.30 to 8.30. No one need be disappointed if not called upon. Encourage those who are doing a worthwhile job by dropping in to the * office and making your contribution. We offer you in return, through the life-blood and treasure of our fighting services the preservation of all that you hold dear. The time to act has come. Be a Sport and back this effort. It will bring you the best dividend in the long run. Thanks, on behalf of the committee. —I am etc. W. HOWE. Nelson, 16th May.
