NELSON TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

SIXTH BIRTHDAY PARTY The sixth birthday party of the Nel- | son Townswomen's Guild was celebrated in the Marsden Hall Library, accommodation being taxed to the utmost. Bowls of beautiful autumn tinted flow- 1 ers were arranged round the room, and each guest and member on arrival was presented with a dainty button-hole, the Gardening Circle members being ; responsible for the flowers and button--1 holes which were greatly admired. Be. | fore singing the National Anthem the ' president (Mrs S. J. Wilson) asked all present to stand for one minute to pay the usual tribute to those fighting for j us. Mrs Wilson then welcomed all pre- ; sent, especially representatives of the j following women's organisations:— Women’s Club (Mrs Gibbs and Mrs E. R. Neale): Plunket Society (Mrs Craighead and Miss Rhodes); Post and Tele- . I graph League (Mrs Tremewan and Mrs Spencer), League of Women Helpers | (Mrs Wicks and Miss Richards»; Hap- j 1 piness Club (Mrs Annear and Mrs Cle- : ments); Catholic Old Girls’ Association (Mrs Byrne and Mrs Sowman); Richmond Women's Institute (Mrs Wilkes and Mrs Scott); Townswomen's West ! Guild (Mrs Gustavel and Mrs McLean); Tahuna Women's Institute (Mrs Douglas and Mrs Baldwyn); W.C.T.U. (Mrs 1 Andrews and Mrs Toomey); Stoke Women’s Institute (Mrs Ching and Miss ! St. John). Birthday greetings were received from the Appleby Women's | Division and Mesdames Plumridge and Walker from Christchurch. A large number of new members was then welcomed, and the business having been dealt with the Musical Circle, led by Mrs H. Claughton, entertained with the presentation entitled “Old English Songs.” The members of this J Circle had arranged the stage into an early Victorian drawing room with the , aid of period furniture and antique ornaments. Each member taking part wore a gown in keeping with the presentation, and the effect was very at- , tractive. The following items were rendered by the Circle: —"Grandfather's J Clock, “Sweet and Low,” “The Lass with the Delicate Air.” Solos, Mrs Ford, “Long, Long Ago”; Mrs Kirby, "Home Sweet Home"; Miss Cole. "There was a Lover and his Lass”; Mrs Wickens, "When Daisies Pied”; Mrs Kirby, "My Pretty Jane”; Miss Stewart, "Silent Worship”; Mrs Heath. "Just a Song at Twilight”; Mrs Scott. "Cherry Ripe.” Mesdames Wickens, Heath, Cole and Miss Cole rendered “Nymphs and Shep- ; herds,” and to conclude this very eni joyable presentation the Minuet was ; then gracefully danced by Mesdames , Wickens, Heath, Cole and Miss Cole. All present showed their appreciation to ■ he Musical Circle by acclamation for I j their time given to make this presen- ' i tation the great success it was. A very dainty afternoon tea was then served by the tea hostess, Mrs Wright, ’ who was responsible for the tea with ? the help of Mesdames Pye-Smith, Stiles, Brough, Neale, Cox, Burn, Stent, McArthur, Holmes, Anderson, Young ! ard Chapman. ; The following circle leaders, officers and retiring officers were then presen--1 ted with very attractive shoulder •; sprays: Mesdames Wilson, Pye-Smith, r ; T olmes. Very Early,” with Mrs Morgan, the leader of this circle, Mrs Hutchings, , Mrs Muggeridge, Mrs H. Wilson, and Mrs Wickens, each member playing her part splendidly. The Bring and Buy Stall was well stocked and did very brisk business during the afternoon, much to the satisfaction of the committee who spare no effort in their endeavour to send their usual large number of parcels to tha men overseas. The president. Mrs Wilson, thanked all those who had taken part in making this Birthday Party the undoubted success it was, and brought the afternoon to a close by asking all present to sing the New Zealand National Anthem.
