rj At a meeting of the Motueka Patriotic Controlling Committee opportunity was taken to make presentations to Privates John Thorp, Edwards and J. e Congdon, who are at present on leave in the Motueka district. The Mayor of Moteuka (Mr S. E. HulG bert) explained to the men that the „ committee, owing to short notice, had

United States he felt sure that Britain ! ; would win the war. On behalf of the borough, the Mayor wished the guests of the evening, who were the recipients of useful gifts God s I speed and a safe return to New Zealand. Mr K. H. Boyd, deputy-chairman of the committee, in joining with the Mayor in extending best wishes for their future said the people of Motueka were under a deep debt of gratitude to the young men who were fighting for those remaining at home. After musical honours had been ac-; corded the three members of the forces, j Private Thorp suitably returned thanks for the kind wishes expressed and for the gifts.
