HIT BY BOMB
LONDON BRANCH OF BANK OF NEW ZEALAND BUILDING VACATED [United Press Association] Wellington, This Day. The London branch of the Bank of New Zealand suffered in the latest blitz over London, and the premises 1 have had to be vacated. One member of the staff was injured. The general manager of the bank, 1 Mr H. R. H. Chalmers, has received 1 the following cablegram from the Lon- 1 don manager, Mr D. F. Reid (form- ’ erly manager at Wellington):— ! “Bomb dropped just outside my win- i dow, slightly penetrating the base of ( the building, although the structure is 1 otherwise intact. Blast has rendered the 1 whole building untenantable for some 1 considerable time and possibly for. the 1 duration of the war. We succeeded in ] preventing the spread of the fire to us. 1 Fire-watchers Basan and Simmonds (messenger) safe; Hayes suffering j from blast.” (These are members of t the London staff of the Bank of New |s Zealand.) “Have secured temporary j t accommodation in the Commonwealth | £ Bank building in Old Jewry.” ,i
